Well, it has been a journey – a 2 year journey facing the 2008 Dakar Rally cancelation and now the 2009 Dakar Rally Documentary… Cancelation.
No filming in the 2009 Dakar Rally for this film girl. Yup. Cancelation. I didn’t see that one coming. 2 years in a row, some odds!
I would like to wish Mark Miller, driver (with Team Volkswagen Motorsport) and Jonah Street, Motorcycle rider (with Team Rally Pan Am) – the best of luck in the 2009 Dakar Rally. They both have the heart and the mind to make history this year to be the first North Americans to capture a Dakar winning title. Mark and Jonah were the main subjects of the Documentary and a director’s dream… Two very humble and genuinely talented men. Both are inspirations on so many levels.
I wish a special thanks to Mark Miller.
He’s got his head on right…
In one his first emails, 3 simple words set the stage for the whole last 2 years of chasing the desert… “enjoy the journey.”
From that, it was easy to understand that it wasn’t the win that was driving this dream. Many of us spend so much time ‘chasing the desert’ or chasing our dreams that we can’t see that we are already lost in the middle of it! Mark is lost in the middle of it all and loves every moment. Even if he wins, he has his heart set on the next adventure… Something about a 2008 Baja 1000 race with his North American home team and a recent Jetta Series he built from the ground up where he mentors young drivers. Something about setting his sights on home… Mark helped me to see how to navigate the desert and endure it’s tests but most of all, not lose sight of the big picture – that journey home.
Thanks Mark, for inspiring my journey.
I haven’t quite been around the world, but it has taken me to many amazing cities, villages and remote desert spaces and have shared adventures with some of the most interesting people in both the desert racing and film and television scenes.
All the pieces are now lined up for a truly unique documentary – but unfortunately with timing, the necessary financing was not secured and the traditional funding route is projected to commence in April of 2009 – well after the start of the rally. We are still looking into pushing the project to 2010 as part of a broadcast adventure series and a supportive, interactive, and live online environment.
As for the 2009 Dakar Rally?
I will be putting the call out to follow as a Live Video Reporter for the 2009 Dakar Rally either solo or with a reporting team. I will also look into a solo Live Video Reporter for a Rally event that is to follow where the ASO’s Dakar left off. They plan to continue the old route from Europe and into Northern Africa to Dakar, Senegal.
“what about that plane ticket to Argentina I have left now?”
Another offer came in from a fellow adventure filmmaker to shoot and provide LIVE daily uploads for the charity ‘ Summits of Hope ‘ in February 2009. I am thinking of it…
Live video reporting all the way up to the Mt. Aconcagua summit. Aconcagua is the highest peak in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres. It is one of the Seven Summits. It is located in the Andes mountain range, in the Argentine province of Mendoza. Altitude: 22,835 ft
Right now for me? November – December 2008?
I am getting back the the feature dramatic script on the Dakar Rally – what lead me down this crazy path in the first place. I have too many stories to just keep to myself, I must share them and the writing is pulling at my pant leg… So, back to the books for this CFG for a while anyway. Of course – home for the holidays… I do miss my family and friends back in Calgary, Canada. Celebrations are in order.
Thanks to everyone for keeping up and the endless support to date. I wouldn’t have made it this far and still be this SANE with out you.
Have a beautiful winter night and sweets dreams. Back to pink UGGS, friends, family, fuzzy sweaters and hoping Whistler snows like CRAZY for some great skiing!! Night everyone.
