NY Banksy War – Day One | Travel Log

Home was a hidden lakefront prairie paradise for a fledgling explorer – it’s now a golf course suburb. I’ve erased that place from the map of my mind and settled it’s shores in childhood fantasy – somewhere that never really existed – except in my mind.

I’m calling this the ‘NY Banksy War’ trip and I’ll let you in on a few secrets.

War.

I am in NY to meet Oscar nominated filmmaker, author of War, and war journalist, Sebastian Junger, who’s film I saw at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. I followed my gut to find him here. He has bunkered inside the worst war zone in Afghanistan and recommended my stay at Carlton Arms. I think I can trust him.

Keys.

New York’s Gramercy district opens with 3 keys in my hand. One to the front door of a derelict gem-of-an-art hotel that most never would know about. The second opens my shared-bath closet-of-a-room inside an art crawl of a dream. The third key is to a second lock I don’t put on my door.

Banksy.

“Banksy stays here.” It’s true. An art project of it’s own right – live-in artists, live-in cat – real edgy and definitely not a pre-fabed hotel-of-a-box that every city guilts showcasing. My room, 15b is right on the stairwell that the now infamous graffiti artist, Banksy took paint to the walls leaving his own dreams behind before the world claimed his guerrilla strokes of genius.

In a city that never sleeps, I slept 17 hours in a city where I typically indulge in melatonin and ear plugs. I slept without aid and woke to a note under my door – an art note – a Banksy mouse. Could it be? Real? I <;3 NY more than ever right now.

Outpost.

Cafe OST, hideout hydration outpost found on a wander in November is within wander distance from 15b. I afternoon with cappuccino and reward today's writings with house wine après 5 o’clock. This muted cafe anchors remote and reclusive life – a hip hidden place 'not to be seen'. My kinda place.

The lights change in the street and sky. Brick walkups, apartment blocks light up as owners return from another New York work day. I'm camped across the street, watch the locals on the sidewalk, taxis drop offs and pick ups – everyone makes their way home tonight.

I think about dinner. Who will be my host for eats before I set off to meet Sebastian for the first time – late drinks at his pub The Half King – if his schedule allows.

Partner in Crime.

I return to find another Banksy note and a graffiti spray can outside 15b! Ok, WHO is leaving secret notes and enabling me to commit an illegal act of art!? Banksy?!? What’s a girl to do tonight in NY with a spray can? Find a partner in crime. Hell yes.

Hello New York. Hello Bansky. I'm wide awake. I love you.

What does a Kitty, a Duck, Tacos & Cowtown have in common?

Well it’s been a CRAZY week both on AND off the Kickstarter Campaign for One Night in Seattle!

All over the map, not getting lost but rather, finding our way into the home stretch and wrangling an AWESOME team in the middle of it all!

So what DOES a Kitty, a Duck, Tacos & Cowtown have in common?

  • a journey
  • a film
  • a dream coming true

The Kitty

Acoustikitty is Arran Fisher’s recording operation, based out of Calgary, Canada. Arran is on board, crafting an ORIGINAL SOUND and MUSIC SCORE for One Night in Seattle. This is not the first time Arran’s music will be a part of an iDream Films Production. The first one wasn’t planned, it was happen-chance. This second one, was much the same. I walked into a cafe, and… well, as per the film and my life, interesting things tend happen when you walk into a cafe, destiny kinda takes the lead if you are open and willing…

I met Arran way back while I was writing the film into the wee hours of the night at Cafe Beano in Calgary. Arran was working as a barrista to pay the bills and make his music. In 1999, Arran formed the psych rock group The Summerlad, which toured several times across Canada and the U.S., released four albums, and received national acclaim for making music that defied easy categorization.

The Summerlad on CBC Radio 3

Oddly enough, when I was filming my Dakar Rally Project, Mark from CBC Radio 3 Vancouver, gave me a playlist with some selected artists and The Summerlad’s ‘City of Noise’ track was among the selections. I picked it without hesitation and only after did I realize this was Arran’s band from back in Calgary. What are the odds?

Well, in May, I went back to Calgary and back to Beano and guess who was sitting there, on the other side of the barrista bar. We re-connected after 5 years, both having been on quite the journey chasing our own passions of producing and media and all it took me was to mention how I was looking for an original soundtrack that would be inspired by how the soundtrack in the critically acclaimed film, Deadmanwas crafted (Neil Young composed the guitar seeped soundtrack with portions he improvised while watching the movie footage).

Seems every iDream Film project needs it’s Acoustic Kitty. This will be the second film project of mine that will feature Arran’s talents.

More about the Duck, Tacos and Cowtown coming up!! Woot!

  • Brian Schecter, media sports business analyst with Puddle Duck Productions, based out of Vancouver, Canada.
  • Chronic Tacos in Gastown is a 2 story Mexican Cantina with amazing eats, mexi-drinks and even late night spinning and skeleton dancing…
  • Word is, a SUNDANCE PRODUCER PASS ($10,000 pledge level) could be pledged on Monday, from my hometown, Calgary, Canada.

Back soon for UPDATES!! WOOT!

Will Work for Film (and food)

20120522-130128.jpg

Welcome to Day 1 at My Day Gig & Outpost Cubicle2068.

It’s my first day back in the Piping Designer seat in the engineering company, Fransen (a Tetra-Tech company) to not only finish my first feature film, One Night in Seattle, but to also (and more importantly) put food on the table.

I’ve been here before. This isn’t something new. Except this time, I’m going to learn everything I can instead of pity myself and guilt myself from the decisions I made leading up to having to lend time from my film towards a seemingly unrelated task. In the past I would go into a panic attack by now – lunch time, time for me to hyperventilate and have a river of tears streaming endlessly from my face – totally unwilled and unstoppable. If this has ever happened to you, you know what I’m talking about – hits you like a brick and something else takes over the ventilation & waterworks. Like being at a loved ones funeral only this one… feels like yours, your dreams, your whole reason to live gone.

This time, this is different. There are a few elements aligning. Something about honesty, authenticity, trust and most important, something a little universal. I asked, and I was lead here. Things are oddly lining up. It feels right. I’m open to see this as a milestone – a next step – an outpost that is going to launch me into my dream even deeper.

I just got a free laptop, a free mug and a whole floor of people who believe in me and a company willing to pay me for my talents! Really, what could be better than this? This leads me to the finish line. The financial means to create amazing experiences around finishing my first feature film. Nothing in this world could be better than this, an 8 year journey coming to a close… Just as I write this, I know the universe is winking and saying “you ain’t seen nothing yet, girl.”

Well, I just have to wink back and say “I know, and you ain’t seen nothing yet either.”

The universe and everyone in it is my co-pilot and we are on quite the adventure. Can’t wait to see what and who is around the next bend.

Charting as we speak…

SLOG – so this is all you need | LOVE

It’s not easy…but I think it’s what we are supposed to do.

Funny, I am labeled a mid level producer, but I feel like I haven’t earned it yet. Same old same old – some times success isn’t material – isn’t something you can show. Success is movement, steps, stages. No one will ever know what you have done to get there, so be gentle with yourself and give the same credit to yourself that you observe in others… You are well on your way.
Learning to give a ‘day’s’ win a place in your heart without the need for a prize – this is all you need to make what you dream a reality.
This I am working to remember. I moved pretty quickly the last few years and never looked back OR even gave myself the time to see where I even was at the moment! I am only now, looking back and saying “holy shit woman… No wonder you are so tired and no wonder people are asking you ‘how?’

So, back to the advice…

#1. fall in love with your vision – it and you are what will carry you through

#2. take good care and special attention to your health – there are NO execptions to this

#3. find people like you – a moment or a life long friendship… These people will be the shelter, food and warmth to enjoy those ‘daily wins’…

Warmth and Dreams;  a whole New Year…

New Years Eve 2009
